Why This Role Matters: Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) is on the lookout for a mid-level Passive House Building Systems Consultant to join our High Performance Building Solutions (HPBS) team in Boston, MA or Norwalk, CT. You’ll be joining a mission-driven team that’s all about assisting project teams develop and construct some of the most energy efficient buildings out there, while meeting some of the toughest performance standards in the industry.

This is a great role for someone who thrives on refining details with architects, digging into systems with engineers, and collaborating with contractors on-site. If you're someone who communicates just as well in a discussion as you do in a report, you’ll feel right at home here.

We’re especially excited to meet candidates who are experienced working on North American Passive House projects. But even if you haven’t worked on a Passive House certified project yet, and you bring relevant experience and passion for this work, we’d still love to hear from you.

The proposed annual salary range for this position is $70,000 - $95,000 based on a 40-hour work schedule. The final salary may vary depending on confirmed job-related skills and experience.

What You'll Do: The role requires someone who can take the initiative and work independently, both in a group environment with the internal team and with clients.

  • Communicate building science principles and green building requirements to project teams (owners, architects, engineers, construction managers, and installers).
  • Review project drawings, conduct energy modeling, and provide design assistance for high-performance buildings.
  • Manage multiple projects, including scheduling, tracking milestones, project budgets and ensuring Passive House compliance in accordance with SWA’s standard policies and processes.
  • Support project teams through design meetings and ongoing support.
  • Communicate effectively and promptly with colleagues, clients, and project teams.

Who You Are:

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or related field with a focus on building systems operations.
  • Preference for candidate with Certified Passive House Consultant or Certified Passive House Designer credential (either PHI or Phius certification).
  • 2-5 years of experience with North American building projects.
  • Thorough understanding of building energy use.
  • Knowledge and practical experience in building science principles, standards, and methodologies.
  • Proficient in PHPP or WUFI Passive software, as well as Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with architects, engineers, clients, and construction teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to evaluate building designs, energy simulations, and performance data.
  • Familiarity with building codes, energy efficiency regulations and sustainability standards relevant to PH construction.

Preferred knowledge:

  • Experience with Passive House projects or other high-performance certification programs.
  • Willingness to gain experience with testing equipment such as blower doors, duct blaster, and infrared camera equipment.

Preferred technical certifications:

  • Familiarity with CAD, Sketchup, THERM, Solido, Flixo, and WUFI Pro (or equivalent software).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee frequently is required to walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand while at project sites.

The employee may be required to lift or move objects up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

*There will be occasional long days on construction sites for performance testing (e.g. blower door) which can be physically demanding (apprx. 8am - 6pm).

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Occasional overnight travel may be required (Less than 5%). Frequent local field visits in the Boston Metro area will be necessary (estimated at 10-20%). Some travel to our offices in Connecticut or New York may be required.

**A valid and clean U.S. driving license is required.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Recent hires may be required to work in-office five days per week during onboarding, with potential for a flexible schedule after necessary training and supervisor approval; all team members are expected in the office at least three days per week, with flexibility based on job duties and site work.
