Energy Engineer - Senior-level

Department: Building Operations Decarbonization & Efficiency (BODE)
Location: New York, NY

Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) is seeking an experienced and innovative Senior Energy Engineer with a strong background in mechanical and HVAC systems. This role, based in NYC within our Building Operations, Decarbonization & Efficiency (BODE) team, involves conducting traditional energy audits, leading the development and implementation of energy management projects, and managing decarbonization feasibility studies. You will also provide retrofit consulting services to help clients comply with New York City Local Law 97’s carbon-emission reduction mandates. The annual salary range for this position is $85,000 - $120,000, based on a 40-hour work week. Final salary will depend on the candidate's skills and experience.

Senior Energy Engineer / Mechanical Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Conduct decarbonization feasibility studies, advanced energy audits, and assessments, as well as retrofit implementation and retro-commissioning for improved energy savings and performance in existing buildings.
  • Lead the development and implementation of innovative energy systems and projects that meet efficiency, cost, and environmental standards.
  • Provide creative solutions to technical challenges.
  • Inspect retrofits and upgrades of building equipment, focusing on electrification and heat pump technologies.
  • Review construction documents and offer recommendations to enhance indoor air quality, energy efficiency, constructability, and building operations.
  • Train and support entry-level and mid-level energy engineers.
  • Facilitate technical training for building industry professionals.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Energy Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience with HVAC systems in large multi-family or commercial buildings.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of energy audits, feasibility studies, retro-commissioning, and retrofit services.
  • Proven experience in designing, implementing, and managing small to medium-sized energy projects.
  • Proficiency with energy modeling and simulation software (e.g., EnergyPlus, HOMER).
  • In-depth understanding of energy systems, energy-efficient technologies, and sustainable design principles.
  • Leadership experience with the ability to mentor junior engineers and potentially manage a team.
  • Experience with building automation and control systems.
  • Advanced Excel skills and proficiency in other MS Office programs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to type, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear. The employee frequently is required to climb stairs, use elevators and exterior construction hoists, and may be exposed to cold and hot interior and exterior temperatures for extended periods of time (when in the field).

TRAVEL REQUIRED: Occasional overnight travel may be required (Less than 10%). Frequent local field visits in the Metro area will be necessary (approximately 40-50%). A valid and clean driving license is required.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: This is a hybrid position. Most of the duties will be performed in an home or office environment. The remainder of the duties will be performed in the field which will involve trips to projects sites for observation and training.
